The Waterways Wanderings of Narrowboat “Just Heaven”

Kinver

Arrived last night to find the boat warmer than pervious visits and the battery topped up so the heater and the trickle charger are obviously working.

A fairly lazy start, we set off about nineish heading for Kinver, mainly to give the engine a bit of a run and to get a pumpout. Stopped breifly at Sainsbury’s to get some food, then stopped at the Wolverley visitor’s mooring for a “full english” cooked breakfast. The first one on board since early November!

The weather was cold, but bright a sunny. There were still patches of ice on the canal in places, though not very thick and a bit slushy, so not likely to do any damage to the blacking.

There was lots of rubbish, logs, fallen branches, leaves etc accumulated at the top gates of each lock. The top gate paddle of Woverley lock wouldnt close properly as there was so much junk wedged in there. It’s very obvious that the BW bankside staff just aren’t around to carry out routine maintenance. This is clearly false economy on BWs part as the work will have to be done sometime, and the longer it’s left the more likely it is that damage to the infrastucture will occur. At some locks the rubbish blocking the bywash weirs had raised the water level enough that it was washing over the towpath at the bridges.

We did the pumpout at the DIY machine, winded just above Hyde lock and then back down to the Kinver visitors mooring. The moorings were surprisingly busy for the time of year, with only two available spaces.

We went for a walk in the afternoon. Along the towpath up to Hyde lock then followed a lane and onto a footpath which took us across some fields and out onto playing fields by the Community Centre. This wasnt the way we had intended to go and we must have taken a wrong turn at some point! Eventually we found the High St and made our way back to the boat.

Ice gone

Woke up this morning to find the ice all gone. Odd that it melted during the night rather than in the day.

I reorganised the wiring for the trickle charger, moving it nearer the battery so that the 12v lines were shorter. Even though the temperature is now above freezing we decided to leave the electric radiator on low incase the cold weather returns.

Did various odd jobs on board then drove home.

Thaw started

The canal is still frozen, but the forecast is for warmer weather and the ice looks like it’s starting to melt.

No cruising so a walk today. Up the towpath to just above Woverley Court lock, then across the footbridge and via a footpath into the village of Wolverley. Had a look round the church, a very nice brick built, Italianate design, but with later addition of a mock Tudor porch which looks completely out of place.

We had a cup of tea in the little teas rooms by the lock and then back along the towpath to the moorings at Roundhill Wharf, about 6 miles in all and very pleasant on a cold, but dry morning.

Flying visit

Just popped up for the evening.

The continuing cold weather makes me a little concerned for the plumbing on board. The Eberspacher central heating is on a frost stat which should protect against any pipes freezing. The problem is that the heater drains the battery in couple of days if the heating comes on frequently.

I have made up a mains lead with a two way adaptor so that both  Bronwyn (the boat next door) and JH can share the only working shoreline output.

I dont have a proper multi-stage charger so, as a temporary measure, I have a standard car battery charger and a time switch set to charge the battery for about four hours per day.

We have also brought with us an oil-filled electric radiator. We’ll leave that on a low setting to give some background heat which hopefully will keeop the frost out.

Iced in

We have brought our two grandchildren Josh(13) and Becca(10) for the weekend. They have been on board before, but not slept.

We arrived about 5 o’clock Friday afternoon to find the canal almost frozen over. A very cold night meant that by the morning that canal was completely frozen. We attempted to move as the plan was to go down to Stourport for the night, but the ice was too thick. So it looks like we’ll be staying put for the weekend.

As we cant cruise to Stourport we drove instead. We went for a walk around the basins and along the riverside path, did some shopping then back to Kidderminster.

Another cold night with the frost stat bringing the central heating on several times during the night. We awoke to find the canal frozen over much more solidly. Back home Sunday morning in time to get lunch for the rest of the family as usual.
