Dorset 2022

2/8/2022

The morning was spent in Weymouth, mooching round the shops and on the beach (Frankie in the water again). We all had lunch in Bertie, then set off for home and they went back to the beach.

Today we have planned a trip to Brownsea Island in Poole harbour. We pre-booked our tickets a couple of days ago. We were booked on to the 11:30 ferry and set off in plenty of time. What we hadn’t reckoned on was the traffic caused by the end on the Bestival festival, but we arrived on time.

Again we took a picnic and spent all day there, not getting the ferry back until 4:30. Quite a bit of time was spent looking for a red squirrel, but all we saw was a quick flash as one scurried away in the undergrowth. Lots of long walks in the heat followed by some time on the beach (with Frankie in the water!) and we were tired on the way back.

On arrival back in Poole we had fish & chip on the harbourside. A fitting end to a great day.

A trip to Kingston Maurward Animal Park and Gardens today. It’s a free facility run by a local college. They have various domestic animals there (goats, cows, rabbits, etc) and extensive woodlands to walk in. We took a picnic and stayed most of the day.

It’s not quite so warm today. Liz & the girls have gone off for a barbecue with her Dorset friends. We had a bit of lunch then set off for a walk along the coast path. We planned to go in the opposite direction from yesterday’s walk. To save going down hill then back up again we took a short cut, but wasn’t an official path so a bit of scrambling through a fence was needed. Lovely views though.

When Liz returned we had a meal and then played games in Bertie.

After breakfast we moved on to Osmington Mills to join Liz and the girls. They are staying here for most of the summer!

Liz had parked her car judiciously to reserve space for Bertie. On our arrival she moved it so that we could park up right next to her tent. After lunch it was first a chill out on the site with Frankie playing and the rest of us reading books. Then we walked down to the beach by the Smugglers arms. It’s a small, stony beach with quite a difficult and steep access, but Frankie enjoyed it!

We have been invited to friends Andrew and Sheila’s for a barbecue lunch. They live in Blandford Forum. The plan is to visit them, then go on to a CL site near Bere Regis for the night, then on to see Liz and the girls at Osmington Mills for a few days.

Today is our 49th Wedding Anniversary! We set off about nine o’clock as it’s a two hour journey to Blandford. Tea/coffee was taken on arrival, then after a short trip in Andrew’s car we went on a walk along the river Stour and a disused railway line near Spetisbury. Back to the house for the barbecue and some relaxing and nattering. Then we set off for Bere Regis and our site for the night.

We are booked in to Wooders camp site, we miss the entrance the first time, but found it down the end of a lane. It’s quite a big site, but not very full so we had plenty of space.
