Alrewas

Between Wychnor and Alrewas the Trent & Mersey canal crosses the river Trent “on the level”, i.e. the two join and follow the same course for a few hundred yards. After a few days of heavy rain this stretch is prone to flooding. The weather forecast was warning of severe rain for today and tomorrow,

Branston

Woke up to a complete change in the weather, cloudy and grey. It stayed overcast until 2:15 when it started to rain. Several boaters we spoke to said that really heavy rain is forecast for tomorrow, so we pressed on until just after 4:00 then stopped for the night. Yesterday Heddi hurt her back while

Shardlow

We awoke this morning to sunshine and a clear blue sky. The moorings outside County Hall in Nottingham are excellent. There’s lots of room and they’re free. The whole of the riverside area is well maintained and an excellent resource for the locals and visiting boaters. Other city councils should take note (Yes Worcester I’m

Gunthorpe

We are now on the river Trent, the non-tidal part. We left Shardlow at about eight o’clock and shared the locks through to Nottingham with a couple going to watch an England vs South Africa game at Trent Bridge . A stop at Sainsburys to top up the fridge & grocery cupboard and then onto

Shardlow

We are now at the end of the Trent & Mersey canal where it meets the river Trent, though this part is the non-scary, not-tidal part. The scary, tidal part is yet to come! A really great day today, the weather lovely and sunny.

Branston Water Park

We had an early start and were away by about eight. There were lots of boats about, but we got through Fradley without having to queue for long. A stop was taken in Arlewas for a late breakfast (Full English). It’s a lovely village and we used to stop here years ago when we had

Handsacre

A really great day today. Only four locks, but got our exercise by going for a 5+ mile walk through Cannock Chase and then back via the Shugborough Hall estate. The footpath goes right through the estate, so we didn’t have to pay (though we couldn’t go round the house itself !). Then back across

Plum Pudding

A very short day today – only 7 miles & nine locks. We did a few jobs around the boat. I treated the roof with a Jeyes Fluid solution to remove some of the algae that had developed during the winter. The problem was that I tried to rinse it off with the mop, the

Wychnor

Still no pics I’m afraid. A busy day today, lots of hire boats about. We haven’t been on the Trent & Mersey for over six years. We used to have a share in the Ownerships boat “Symphony”. At one time it was based at Barton Turns marina. So we used to know this section well.
